Before The Open Grave (A Loving Tribute To My Friend Dr. Clarence Martin) Poem by Alto Lee Thomas, Jr.

Before The Open Grave (A Loving Tribute To My Friend Dr. Clarence Martin)

Rating: 5.0

I stand before the open grave
As dirt, by handfuls, slowly trickle down to coffin's lid.
We greet each other's reddened eyes with tearful smiles
And gaze down upon the remnants of our longtime friend.

I stand before the open grave.
Startled as a massive murder takes to wing,
Their distant echoes faintly sing,
As if to say, 'Why now so cold? '
Take our memories to warm your bones
And our loving brotherhood to make you whole.

I stand before the open grave
Reflecting on spring memories of youthful times
May March's gales ferry forth your rising soul
Bemoaning how we kept the stars but lost the moon
Darker nights now vainly rail against the Will and, in futile voice decries,
'This healer has been torn from us too soon.'

I first met Clarence during his fellowship at MCP. He was an amazing doctor and so great to work with. He was funny, smart and so very kind to patients. I was devastated to learn of his passing, he was taken from us way too soon. We will miss you Clarence!

I had an appointment with Dr. Martin a few weeks ago. He was my doctor and friend. During my appointments, we would talk about my health and political issues. He asked me to attend a wonderful golfing event that he sponsored along with others. I told him that I would attend next year. I am shocked to learn of his passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. I will miss him. I am sorry that I did not accept his invitation tthis year.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Martin at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Dr. Martin was loved by both the staff and his patients. His Passing is a loss to all those who knew him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, he will be missed by all. Patrick J. Driscoll RN, BSN
