Appalloosa Poem by Richard J.P. O'Grady

Appalloosa

History remembers the Nez Perce.
Pursued through four States, along Lolo Trail.
Amidst frozen Rockies, Bitter Root and Bear Paw,
Chief Joseph falls - silence, snow speckled, smothers.
'The horse holds the key, ' exhorts General Howard.
Hundreds were slaughtered, or sold at Fort Keough.

Snake River pastures, 'green place', grassy meadows,
roan, spotted Leopard, Snowflake and White Blanket,
saved by Palouse, removed from all fighting.
Lewis and Clark saw them, Blackfoot Sioux stole them,
'Horse of America' famed the world over.
But we still remember the Nez Perce!
