Always One Better Poem by Francis Duggan

Always One Better

You may be quite brilliant at whatever you do
But remember there's always one better than you
The World number 1 as number 1 does not stay
Some one will displace them that's life as some say
If not sooner then later the best can be beat
And the champion is moved to tears in defeat
And the adulation goes to the new number 1
As well as the big prize respect and honour by the winner is won
The ego of the number 1 with each victory may grow
But whether it be a he or a she that person ought to know
That one day they too will be seen as over the hill
And if age doesn't beat you some one younger will
You may feel that one greater than you is not out there to find
But there's always one better you keep that in mind.
