Always How It Goes (A Song) Poem by Jade Leven

Always How It Goes (A Song)

if the objects in the mirror
are closer than they appear
then I must be so far from knowing who I am
when I look into the glass
I only see my past
so far behind where I currently stand

but I'd risk my life thousands of times
just to see you look up at me from that desk chair
and I'd give up so very much
to hear your voice and know you're actually there

in through my second-floor window
into my heart so quickly, but you know
that's always how it goes
into my life, to help me realize
everything I need is right there in your eyes
but you know, that's always how it goes

your hands in your pockets, you take the stage
like picking up a familiar book
and running your fingers across the page

I can't believe that's your voice, coming out of those speakers, so loud
you're not singing to them, you're singing to me
and I'm the only one in the crowd

nothing will ever mean as much
as your deep eyes and your gentle touch
you've got me wearing my heart on my sleeve so it shows
but you know
that's always how it goes
