Alone We Are One Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Alone We Are One

Rating: 5.0

I am no leader.
I am no teacher.
I speak for myself.
I tutor no one else.

Our leaders are fragile,
Flawed, overawed
By the destinies they decide
To set themselves upon.

But still they push on
To their deaths and beyond.
Speaking to us from faded pages
Haunting us with their failures.

So in their names each generation
Takes up the weight and shoulders it
A few steps forward before stumbling,
Crushed by the momentum against them.

And still the need rises like a phoenix
In an endless progression of saviors
To mount the pyre and sing requiems
Eloquent in their appeal to our better selves.

Maybe they move us forward.
Maybe they lift us up.
Maybe they can do nothing more
Than keep us from dying inside.

I salute them
Their energy
Their certainty
Their courage.

But I have none of this.
So I sit in witness
Brooding privately
Praying silently
Meditating in the faith
That even alone we are one.

Yours is a mature view in this poem, Suzanne, a better one than I mostly hold. There’s a burden in leadership which I know in a small way from positions I’ve held. But it seems to me that often those who seek it, who seek the power, are the last ones who should have it. Interestingly, in Bible stories, when God who knows calls, those called—like Moses, Gideon, David—don’t want the responsibility. How different from those today who crave it and whose most stellar quality is ambition. -Glen

'That even alone we are one'.... is a simple statement with profound meaning. This is a commentary on this age. Thanks.
