Alone Poem by True Merritt

Alone

Alone.
That’s how
He chose to end it.
In the same place that
He had inhabited for
Approaching thirty-five years

He was
A young
Man back in those days
Barely twenty-one.
He made a choice that changed him.
The choice landed him in there.

But, he
Was told
Everything he did
Was the proper thing.
He didn’t know who he was
Inflicting that much pain on.

They said
It would
Help the big picture.
It was just three, of
Them, they weren’t even really
Humans. They are below him.

So then
He did
It, as he was told.
The legality
Was a different story
And that’s what caught up with him

Of course
He’s caught.
But he got his life.
That’s more than they had.
He could have ended up
Like the three who he picked

He ended
Himself
With only the sheets they
Gave him when he came.
The families don’t even
Get to see him die.

Interesting phrasing. It's sad to be without a choice.
