Addiction Poem by Afia Gyimah

Addiction

Rating: 5.0

You can make so many promises
But they'll always break them
You can love them so much
And they can love you back
But they love the feeling more
Than they ever will you
You can put every ounce
Of trust that's in your bones
Into believing them
But they'll always go back
To the feeling
That makes them happier
You can watch them ruin themselves
But you can't help
They'll always go back
You can watch them crawl
Dragging their body on the concrete
To come back to you
And you may embrace them
Force them to make a promise
But they still go back
Until there is nothing left
They will find something stronger
Something more dangerous
Until they don't feel anymore
Not love for you
Nor for the simplest feelings
And when they come crawling back
Once again
They are nothing but a mere skeleton
And they no longer behave as you remember
They're still here
But they're not here
And you will watch them leave again
Trust broken time and time again
And you will watch them gather their bones
Piece them back together all crooked
Jagged edges sticking in every which way
As they shakingly attempt to go back
Crawling with the little strength they have left
Scattering pieces behind them as they leave
And when you expect them to come back again
The usual routine
You will see that they never will
Because there is nothing more to bring back
