Upon the whistle
We begun the walk for freedom
Trudged on
Passed the thickets
Thorny and bushy
We held hands
Felt for once the warmth
That for ages
Had abandoned us
We blew whistles
As we trumpeted
Tambourines vibrating
Round the freedom field
We held hands
And sat around the mirth
Thirty six gunshots into the fresh air
Marked the thirty six months
Lost away in bondage
At last
As we held hands
At last
Light! Light! Light at last!
Freedom at last!
We held hands.
