A Tennis Trier Poem by Ananta Madhavan

A Tennis Trier

Rating: 4.0

In my teens I took to tennis,
Having once seen a match at Wimbledon.
I believed I could compensate
For my tender serve and feeble backhand,
With my imagined forehand drive, adown the line.
I tried and tried, but often was outplayed
By hefty blokes who parried my returns.

Before I could utter,
"The ball is in your court, my friend, "
He had volleyed it back, and I,
Wrong-footed, lost the point.
But I mentally consoled myself,
"The game, set and match were surely mine."

Dear Poet Chandra Chakra, I am deeply thankful to you for reading my poems in PH and conveying your empathetic response. When I have a reader like you, I feel gratified in my effort to keep giving expression to my thoughts and feelings in words, however imperfect they may be. With my warm regards and good wishes, AM
