A Solemn Petition Poem by John Lars Zwerenz

A Solemn Petition

Creator of all,
The mountains and the sea,
The belvederes of rapturous glee,
The willows, ivory, soft and tall,
Do harken unto me.

I beg you, Father, do not gaze
With your Divine, all knowing, azure eyes
Upon my brutal, countless crimes
Done knowingly so many times
Committed in such malevolent ways
Beneath your boundless, regal skies.

O, my tender, loving, merciful Lord,
I pray in this verse of solemn petition
To live with you of one accord
In the Trinity of your gilded, Catholic religion.

So as the ancient mysterion of the moonlight arrives,
Along with sullen shades and shadows of the night
Effaced by You, my Christ, who makes all matter bright,
I hope to be counted among the lives
You comfort, renew, kiss and count blessed.

For into your Father's house of joy
I beg that you receive me as a repentant, pious boy.
My God, my God, deliver me from this vale of bitter pain,
And grant that I may never stray nor roam
From the majesty of your diamond home,
Where in sanctified glory You rightfully reign.
Lord, do deign to take me to your fair mother's breast,
Where I may find eternal rest.

Amen
