A Single Light Poem by Peter Black

A Single Light

And so it sets
Ever since I was born seen as less;
But I was loved and in private kissed,
Told I was good—superior blessed.
I was liked alone where eyes can't come.

Then in the world where people move
Jump, scream, touch machines; move
I was noticed, but noticed as less
And those who loved me held their breath
Saying excuses, in a rosy mood.

But where I came short, I do not know!
Commits no crime, hates no soul;
But always does good or does nothing at all.

If I was ever to become myself
And be seen by all how I know myself
I'll watch pride swell in eyes that left,
Hearing great praise from loved ones; loved nowhere
I should feel the same and never forget.
