A Poisonous Whisper Poem by derrick foster

A Poisonous Whisper

Jim crow has reawakened
With a whisper
Spreading poison subtlety
Look closely at the under belly
Read between the lines
Wisps of oppression seep out daily
Can you hear it?
A smattering of bias disguised
As everyday ideas
Propaganda sprinkled about like drops of dew
It accumulates beneath the surface
And no one notices immediately
A picture posed as art but
Sending a dangerous message
Covered in nostalgia
Issuing in an old decayed system
Bells and whistles make it shiny
So bright the blind can see it
And we'll purchase freely, believe fully and share like candy
This is how genocide, fascism and discrimination grow
Like weeds to strangle diversity
And block out humanity
It happens little by little
Like a whisper
Before we know it
The whisper becomes a roar
That bites at the heels of society
And swallows us whole.
