A Loss Of Nerve? Poem by Richard Blanch

A Loss Of Nerve?

‘At home even the walls help….’ (Anna Karenina)

Boundless space entices
Like Liberty’s self, freeing us
From the visible. Distance
Charms distinction from the eye
For where all is seen, in this Russian
Expanse of air, where is the need for
The dance of definition? In this trance
Nothing is divisible. Everything is one
Wonderful inclusiveness, Sun,
Sky and Earth. Reason has overslept
And, waking, is appalled at all
This uncontrollability. I too.
Suddenly vastness terrifies. Thought needs refuge.
This is my house, these are my walls. They help.
Perhaps tomorrow I will roam the steppes.

Engaging thought, particularly liked 'reason has overslept'

I enjoyed this so much. 'Vastness terrifies' perfectly captures the emotions many feel, though longing to be free. The last line gives hope, not false, I hope. Thank you.
