A Divine Site Poem by Anupama Anpat

A Divine Site

When the sun shone on the little town,
it looked like a jewelled crown.
It was a picture of calm and peace,
where folks lived life with ease.

Men finished their work at the bay,
and headed home to wash and pray.
Wives prepared the food with care,
the flavoured smells filled the air.

The village scenery was pictorial,
as if to beauty, it was a memorial.
People lived joyously together,
relations supple as a feather.

They laughed and shared their sorrows,
emotions of kindness freely borrowed.
It was a place so tranquil and divine,
a place that was one of it’s kind.

One day a stranger came by,
he soon caught people’s eye,
his state was poor and piteous,
but the villagers were not vicious.

To turn away the needy was not their trait,
they thought from their hearts straight.
They fed and sheltered him for days,
till he was better and out of his daze.

He thanked them for their generosity,
happy that humanity was still not a scarcity.
He said ‘this was a test,
to see how you treat a deprived guest.’

‘I am pleased with what I see,
you are all a part of me,
to heaven, you have gained entry,
this is God’s own country.’
