    Well put GJ.
When discussing music with a musician friend many years ago we were discussing musicians who " broke the rules" . My friend explained that the musicians who were best at extemporising were those who knew and respected the " rules. This knowledge and respect allowed them a greater insight into which rules could be broken and when in order to produce the most pleasing outcome for their creativity. I feel grammar should be treated the same way.

Call me old and irrelevant but I agree with your sentiments. I have read too many " poems" that seem to me to be great examples of English expression with new paragraphs created in what appear to be random places with no regard paid to grammar, phrasing or the images being presented.

I too have found writing poetry to be a great catharsis. Its a way of overcoming the frustrations that life builds for me, to vent the hurts I have and sometimes provide the joy of being creative. A 20th century philosopher [ I think Noam Chomsky] maintained that we are creative beings and can be left discontent and unfulfilled unless we create something. I can not draw and for me the " shed" as never provided the comfort that words do.
