    Library of Congress Seeks Nominations for Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Poetry Prize

    The Library of Congress is accepting nominations from publishers for the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry. The 2014 prize will be awarded in the fall.
    The prize, which carries a $10,000 award, is given biennially. It will be presented to an American poet for the best book published during the previous two years,2012 and 2013, or for lifetime achievement in poetry. Publishers may submit entries for the best book; the lifetime achievement awarding is at the sole discretion of the prize jury and the Librarian of Congress.

    Applications must be postmarked by July 31,2014. Guidelines for submission, as well as a list of previous winners, can be found at www.loc.gov/poetry/prize-fellow/bobbitt.html.

    The Poetry and Literature Center at the Library of Congress fosters and enhances the public’s appreciation of literature. The center administers the endowed chair, U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry; coordinates an annual season of readings, performances, lectures and symposia; and sponsors prizes and fellowships for literary writers.     2014 Wasafiri New Writing Prize

    The prize is open to anyone worldwide who has not published a complete book.
    Three categories: Poetry, Fiction and Life Writing.
    Fees: £6 for one category, £10 for two categories and £15 for three categories.
    To enter, simply fill in the entry form and send it to us with your entry and fee in UK Sterling.
    The closing date is 5pm GMT on 25 July 2014.
    A maximum of 5 poems can be entered and the word limit for Fiction and Life Writing is 3000. Other terms and conditions apply.
    £300 will be awarded to the winner in each category and their work will be published in Wasafiri.

    The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award

    Poems: The competition is free to enter, and attracts entries not just from Britain but from around the world. Any writer between the ages of 11 and 17 ON JULY 31 can enter. Poems can also be sent by e-mail. Poets can enter as many poems as they choose, of any length and on any theme. Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances, so please make sure you send copies only. All winners and runners-up will receive book prizes donated by publishers Bloodaxe and Faber & Faber, plus free youth membership of the Poetry Society for one year, and will be invited to an awards party at the Royal Festival Hall on National Poetry Day in October. The 15 overall winners will be invited to attend the prize-winners' writing course at the Arvon Centre.

    Marie Alexander Poetry Award

    Prose poem book manuscript: The Marie Alexander Series is currently not taking unsolicited manuscripts. The contest will resume in 2015. An award of $500 and publication will be given for a chosen collection of prose poems or flash fiction by an American writer. Submit a manuscript of at least 48 pages, which can include some lineated pieces, along with a cover letter with complete contact information and an SASE for notification only. Postmark must be between July 1 and 31; the mailing address will be posted in early 2012. Entries should also include a simultaneous electronic submission of the manuscript (MS Word or PDF format) sent to editor@mariealexanderseries.com. There is no entry fee.

    Three prizes of $500 each are given annually to a poet, a fiction writer, and a creative nonfiction writer who have a connection to upstate New York. A prize of $500 is also given annually to a U.S. military veteran. Writers who have not published a book with a nationally distributed press are eligible. The editors will judge.     Three prizes are given annually to a poet, a fiction writer, and a creative nonfiction writer to honor their first books. The winners each receive an all-expenses-paid trip to several of the 13 GLCA colleges, each of which pays an honorarium of at least $500, to give readings, meet with students, and lead discussions and classes. Books published between the spring of 2013 and the spring of 2014 are eligible. Faculty members of the colleges will judge. Publishers may submit four copies of one book in each category by July 25.
