Whiteness

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Power and control.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Subcutaneous control of knowledge.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Stained images of other

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Cellular exploitation.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Pores of superiority.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Deep layers of oppression.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
Severed land and stolen babies.

White skin, light skin, right skin,
My skin.

My skin, my skin, my skin,
Complicated complicity

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
As a non-Indigenous person seeking to do the heavy lifting required for personal reconciliation work, deep self reflection is mandatory. This poem was born from critical reflexivity and the admission of my own complicity in the continued systemic oppression of Indigenous peoples in Canada. In my opinion, this is one of the first steps, after learning of our true history, of Indigenous reconciliation and allyship.
