Undrstanding The Subaltern

The king, the ruler was a videshi
And how could it be the ruler going against
The masses
And taxing them in terms of levies?
A blatant repudiation of king and kingship!

Understanding the encroachments, inroads
Made into India
Through invasions and lootsand plunders
Taking it to be a booty
During the dark, barbaric medieval ages.

Understanding patriarchs, village councils,
Fanatics, fundamentalists,
The conservatives and the orthodox
And their rigidity,
How much bound were they by
Social taboos!

The British colonel and the Indian sepoy
Or the orderly,
Talks shared with,
The missionary in India during colonial times,
Villages of India
Reeling under poverty, misrule, underdevelopment.

Medieval crowds, a motley of religious peoples
Segregated by ghettos,
So conservative and orthodox,
Reasonably cold and dead
To logic and reasoning,
As for reasons whatsoever,
A study in paglets, Indian paglets
With their do's and dont's.
