These Days

These days the world crashes
Into our sweet, cosy homes,
Like a great, speeding train.
There's no escape it seems
From the constant barrage
Of crass advertisements
And other alleged
Forms of mass entertainment.
Perhaps we should switch off
Our smart phones and screens;
Just sit back and read some books.
It seems it's best perhaps
To ignore the buzz of the Zeitgeist;
For it invariably leaves us
With feelings of profound emptiness.
It is constantly perplexing!
