Su Tung-Po: The Great Yangtze Keeps Rolling Towards The East, Its Waves Never Cease

Tune: Niao Laoqiao (Remembering The Maiden Fair)
Title: Reminiscing The Past At Chi Bi (Red Cliffs)
- Su Tung-Po (Su Shi) (1037-1101)
- Translated by Frank C Yue

The Great Yangtze keeps rolling towards the East,
Its waves never cease
Sweeping away heroes of old.
To the west of the ancient fort, I'm told,
Was the site of Zhou Yu's famous Battle of the Red Cliffs.
The fierce rocks pierce the sky,
Angry waves crash onto the riverside,
Churning up a thousand heaps of snow.
Like a picture pretty,
My country lovely --
There were countless great men
And heroes then.

The brilliant Zhou of the Three Kingdoms period at the time
Just married the Young Qiao fair.
With his plumed fan and silk cap fine,
Gallant Zhou Yu laughed and spoke,
Enemy masts and oars were reduced to ashes and smoke!
Whilst touring the old country,
Such an emotional guy am I;
My hair is turning gray early.
Life is like a dream (forever) ,
I raise my cup to toast the Moon and the River.
