Sally Seagull Poem by Noreen C

Sally Seagull

Sally Seagull sweeps the sky.
Sally Seagull soars on high.
Sally Seagull swoops and dives.
Sally Seagull spies some fries.
Sneaky Sally starts to scurry,
super quick and in a hurry!
Sally snatches salty snacks,
steals some Snickers, n' Honey Smacks!
She swoons over Saltines and sunflower seeds,
on Skittles and sweet S'mores she feeds.
Suddenly!
Sammy Seagull sees Sally's score!
He never wants a little, he always wants more…
Sammy Seagull is such a squawker…
screeches at Sally and snags her cracker.
Sharing isn't Sammy's style.
Sally steps back for a little while.
'Shame on Sammy!
He's such a stinker!
Sassy Seagull, Spoiled Oinker! '
Never shares, always scares…
'Selfish Seagull!
Scavenger! Scoundrel! '
Always snappy and swift to squabble!
Sally cries and spreads her wings.
She'd rather spend her time on other things.
Sally spots some fresh seaweed,
scoops some up and takes the lead.
She swipes a snail and a starfish too,
starts a sand dance called zippity-do!
…Skims the surface of a wave,
'My! Oh my! Miss Sally's brave! '
Shore competitions are so much fun.
Sally lifts off and soars up to the sun.
Sally Seagull up in the sky.
Sally Seagull, way up high.
Sally Seagull sails in the breeze.
'Sally Seagull! Come back please! '
Time for Sally to fly away…
Come back Sally another day!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This was a children's story I wrote to teach S word vocabulary of verbs and nouns and adjectives with the aim of helping younger children build language quickly through rhythm and rhyme. The inspiration for this story was my pet seagull I named Sally from my childhood who my dad rescued and rehabilitated. She was found in the woods with a hook in her wing from being caught in a fishing line. My daddy removed the hook and bandaged her wing and we cared for her until she was healed and able to fly away!
