My downs syndrome child never a mistake
Being told during a pregnancy scan it was
I felt horror at what the doctors were saying:
Hurt my precious and innocent child?
But I gave birth to a beautiful girl I named Maxine
Her oriental eyes pretty and unique and all-seeing
Her personality vibrant and wonderfully fiery
Her ability to learn at school incredible.
The teachers having had assumed she'd be slow:
They couldn't have been more wrong
She'd in fact find some subjects easier than her friends
Perhaps because she knew she was supposedly "different".
She learnt what I taught her at home too:
Cooking, sewing, reading children's books and some mathematics
She'd pick up facts and figures during TV programmes
And learnt social skills like any kid does.
I remember my parents shocked reaction
When they first saw my child as a baby
But I didn't care because I love my daughter
And I love her with all my heart.
