Mortality

I was stunned to hear those dreadful words
My heart feels heavy from what I heard.
We stand on the brink of mortality
Worrying now what is to be.

So young his heart, his strength of mind
It’s better to leave the fear behind
So on we go and trust our fate
That this is found and not too late.

The journey forward now we go
To the next test and what it will show.
The cadence of his heart is questioned
Though fast this beat, then a hesitation.

And on we go to our next destination
Yet another test with trepidation
How much is too much with all the tests?
There are no guarantees, just a professional guess.

So many tests, so much medication!
A stringent routine and dedication.
He’ll come through this with flying colors!
Just follow to the letter the doctor’s orders.

At last we arrive at the end of the trial.
He took the prescription for just a while.
Thank God he took the right combination!
He’ll stay on drugs now for the culmination.

He has to take pills for the rest of his life,
But that’s no big deal; he avoided the knife.
And in just a few years he’ll reach his retirement.
And we’ll travel throughout this entire continent.

Dear Lord, I know that You always know best.
But please, Sir, just grant me this one last request.
There’s so few good people left on this planet
It’s a better place with this man of mine in it
