Mental Health Poem by Kaitlyn Lancaster

Mental Health

People say mental health is a myth,
That it's just a label that people use as an excuse.
Honestly, that gets me so mad.
Just because you haven't seen or experienced something doesn't make it imaginary.
I for one have seen physical proof,
Of breakdowns,
Of feeling hopeless,
Of just simply not wanting to exist,
In the people, I know,
Let alone strangers.
Yeah,
I might not have experienced it first hand,
But I have seen self-harm on my friends,
I have seen brains breaking down in stress,
People crying because of ‘something silly',
People vanishing from existence to recuperate.
So,
I advise the people saying stuff about said stuff,
To do your goddamn research,
You won't even have to do much,
Just look around you,
Look at the people,
It's a fact that 1 in 4 people are affected by mental health issues,
So seriously it won't be hard to see.
So next time you go to make a joke about mental health,
Or go to make fun of someone who is struggling,
Think about it,
And maybe,
Just possibly,
Just,
Don't.

Brave utterances set aside for sober reflection. A well articulated piece of poetry written with insight. Thanks for sharing Kaitlyn.
