London Blitz

Hitler ordered London blitzed believing the destruction would
force the British people to demand Churchill surrender with
the thousands killed and city in ruins. On the 7th September
1940, German bombing began with sustained raids on civilian
targets. Hitler underestimated spirit and resolve of the British
people who remained steadfast and unyielding. Over 9,000
civilians died in the raids.

Air raid sirens scream warning
German bombers are coming
Death soon to fall
Bringing destruction and death.

Panicked people running for air raid shelters
Waiting there for the rain of death to end
Emerging to find houses made rubble
Dead lying among the ruins.

Streets are ablaze
Roads smashed and broken
Living and dead buried where houses stood
Death has reaped asunder.

In London's East End
Where a green grocer's shop once stood
Flies a flag fluttering in the breeze
Inscribed "Still open for business".

I admire the poet's succinct portrayal of London under German bombings during WW II. No doubt there was loss of life and property, Germans could not break the spirit of British govt., forces and people. Thanks for sharing this patriotic poem.
