Infidelity Poem by Robert R. Railey

Infidelity

Infidelity

Fidelity is, the lack of opportunity or fear of oppression, or so it has long been said
And even though a tryst might excite our passions, betrayal will fill us with dread
But the urge to do so, and not carry through, is a difficult and moral dilemma; for the inner warnings, which are always there, might not suffice when the moment is near
We'll tell ourselves, hyperboles and such, and believe that we will be shameless; if just one time, and if nobody knew, but would it really be wise or worth it?
The plan was perfect, the scenario safe, it looked as though foolproof; and if no one knows but those two souls then their wishes might just be granted
But will they forget to plan ahead for the battle of the conscience that's
bound to follow?
The nefarious deed has now been done and they've joined the masses
of cheats, honor and trust, by felonious lust, have been murdered and rendered impure
Tomes have been written and songs have been sung of the duplicity to
those most dear
They'll rationalize their acts, though, and then blame Eros, for their lapses and lack of ethics
But deep in their souls, the guilty all know, that they would gladly do it again, even though they believe it's a sin
