Arizona Sunsets

I lounge atop my weary shed
Drenched in sunset's dying rays
Hide inside my weary head
And reminisce on simpler days.
Days that crawled on hands and knees
Across the cloudless, blue expanse
Celebrating monotony
Like so many mindless ants.

Such days had a certain structure
Which I'd perceived to be a cage
With freedom outside, to be ushered
In once I became of age.
Imagine, then, my surprise,
When, finally, they let me out
To find beyond the bars there lies
Little left of dreams but doubt.

Thus must I take this throne on high
And bid farewell the dying day.
Blowing both a kiss and sigh
Wishing it would somehow stay
If only so I could wish more
Though now i hardly know what for.
