Walking Alone

Walking alone
By Zolani Kupe

An overnight mist
Covers the whole village
A thick smog hovers over it
The young man
An emissary to pass on news about death
Walks alone in the village
His heart bleeds and pangs
The dead one was his cousin
They grew up together
Played stick girding together
Charmed girls together
Now he is no more
He is dead.
The young man must pass on the sorrowful news
He crimps the edges of his trousers
So they don't absorb dust
Then he goes onward
But the pain burdens him too much
He constantly halts
Convoys of crawling and noising crickets accompany him
And then walks on
His mind pondering the reasons for this death
They did not tell him how Lizo died
Again he stops to think more about this tragedy
'How did he die? '
'Where was god? '
'Where were the ancestors? '
Kicking the dry soil and blunt stones
He walks
The village where the death news is to be taken to is calm
Dogs asleep
People asleep
Everything is dozing
He walks but still the burden overwhelms him
He fantasises about their childhood
He becomes wearier
He collapses
His heart just fails him
He dies on the spot.
