Valerie Lennox Poems

Inexorably, minutes tick by
And time seeps slowly past
Like the trickle through the crack in the dam
Hardly noticed until
...

A life on hold….waiting.
No morning chats, when sleep creeps tattered away
Chased by the dawn.
And I wake to find you leaning over me,
...

Oh Baby! its been a long long time
I’ve been missing that love of mine
And it feels like only yesterday
That my darlin’ just slipped away
...

A solitary windmill piercing the washed out sky
Alone it stands against the flat landscape, a sentinel
And, every now and then, creaks
As a bashful breeze teases the sails and then is gone.
...

5.

Time, counting the minutes sliding by, gone forever
Gotta keep busy, gotta keep goin’, gotta occupy my mind
Cos time heals, it’s said, they said, just time
Sliding by
...

Playing in the streets, chalk lines on the warm tar
A bat and ball…an old tin can for wickets.
Climbing over garden walls stealing peaches
Plump, sweet, juice running down our chins
...

Watching the moon set dipping deep orange into the sea
Smelling the night jasmine drift by on the balmy warm breeze
Hearing the nightjar call eerily for its mate
Sleepily, you reach for me
...

They say that you have to give up past loves before a new love is born
They say you must clear away all the hurt and look to the dawn
They say you never will find someone waiting to lie in your arms
Till the old love is gone and the path to your heart
...

Six am the alarm breaks shrilly into the scattered edges of a dream
And the grey dawn peeks through a tattered gap in the curtain
Fumbling for a moment, reaching for the shattered start
Of yet another battered day.
...

I cleared out the attic today and found a box, sealed with tape
It wasn’t marked and I couldn’t remember what was inside
I’ve carried it around for many years
Moving from one place to another, as my life has changed.
...

Sometime I need to shake off the fears
Push doubts and maybes aside
Sometime I have to just take the plunge
Although I'm shaking inside
...

I love you simply…
No boundaries, limitations, conditions or exceptions
It is just there,
As a daisy rises through a crack in the pavement
...

You were always my hero
My trust was unshakeable
I knew that you would always be there to catch me when I fell
...

Come walk with me among the trees
Aged and gnarled with their branches reaching high
Ever stretching towards the warmth of the sun.
They hold the essence of a hundred years and more
...

The way you looked at me ….. lovingly
And touched me ….. tenderly
And spoke to me ….. softly
All lies!
...

16.

Just a touch ….. the promise of a touch
Just a certain kind of look
Just a way of saying something
A gentle aside, a soft glance…..
...

We are destined to be together
All the years that have past
While we’ve been apart
Are nothing but life lessons
...

Turning a blind eye, pretending not to see the signs
That would be so blatantly obvious if it were not that I don’t want to see
All the time holding on to sweet memories that cast
A veil of disbelief over the blatant truth that is
...

You have that way of coaxing from me
All you want to know
You charm, flatter and make me feel safe
And the words from me just flow
...

The beast stumbles
Knees buckle and as it gasps
The buzz of a chainsaw fills the night air with
Raucous screech and birds desert their roost

Treading Water

Inexorably, minutes tick by
And time seeps slowly past
Like the trickle through the crack in the dam
Hardly noticed until
The level has dropped leaving a high water mark that no rainfall can reach

No storms can ever, no matter how wild
Fill the time, replenish the source
It is forever gone.

Hands once straight and strong
Grasp for a steadying hold
And gnarled and crooked fingers reach out
To touch, veined and wrinkled, and with a sigh
Retreat to clasp in withered unity, each other.

And rheumy eyes strain
To see the light as warm sunshine
Dapples on the leaves outside the window
Shadows flit and sometimes materialize in song
As a bird comes close and shakes its feathers
Now seen, then gone.

Life, punctuated by
Meal times, institutionalized episodes
In a drama so small and insignificant
And once a week, when duty calls
And his world is filled with sound and bustling
And all too soon, is quiet, again.

Treading water, a life lived in memories
Of love and loss and pain and joy
A symphony, now silent, of voices.
Echoes down dusty halls
And crumbling walls of a life once lived.

Of purposeful meaning marching forward
Ever on, not taking the time
To stop and see the…feel the…pulse of life
To notice the changes until it ends
Here, in this small room, alone.
