Sumana Bhadra

Sumana Bhadra Poems

Lifeless little planets-
Eyes that revealed nothing
But an empty world to me.
A world, long deserted by its inhabitants.
...

I'm broken.
Like a shattered window pane
I lay scattered on the floor.
The shards reflect a distorted me.
...

The ink slithers onto the paper
Contorting into some not-so-pleasant words.
Absurd clusters of letters-
Skeletal frames to absurder thoughts

Abandoned, Adopted

Lifeless little planets-
Eyes that revealed nothing
But an empty world to me.
A world, long deserted by its inhabitants.

That little brown baby.
My furry little brown baby.
Never taught to be loved,
His soul was crushed
As mercilessly as a lemon on a squeezer.

The boot of the car, shut with a thud.
They didn't even give him a goodbye peck.
Didn't turn back,
As he kept standing there
Amidst the fumes the car left behind.
His little heart,
Like lemon flesh
Shred and bled out
Every beautiful thing it held.

He looks up at me now.
Tries to gauge
The authenticity of my love.

Love.
He had explored that once
With the little boy who took him on his morning strolls.
Wide roads. Little steps.
Happy whistles. And a happy wag.
Love, that was.
But then that turned into a sloshy pulp
Like the wet papers
That had had on them, his favourite stories.

I inch closer.
He curls back into the corner.
A chocolate cookie.
Curious eyes.
He hesitates. Our eyes meet.
Ah, the warm hazel of those eyes.
I find the saddest tales in them now.
They aren't empty, I realize.
The desolation and forlornness
Made them look like abandoned rooms.

I touch that warm fur coat.
He doesn't complain.
Little beastie.
I hold him closer now.
Close to my heart.
And I whisper promises in his ears-
Of retelling his favourite stories,
Of making him believe in happy whistles and happy wags again.
His incredulity
About happy endings,
Was like a wide ravine
That stretched endlessly before me.
I'd cross it, I knew.
I'd fill his ravine
With rivers of happiness again.

...

Three summers.
Three winters.
Seasons of happy togetherness.
I took him out on his morning stroll today.
And we walked through those wide streets.
The happy whistles and the happy wags
-We celebrate them, everyday now.
