Stephen Martin II Poems

I have hit the bottom
and it is farther down,
than I once imagined.
...

Foot taping
Pen in hand
I wanna write
It seems I can't
...

3.

I bought these shoes in Baltimore.
I'll walk until they're worn.

I wear down the rubber soles,
...

Are you here with me tonight?
This is my darkest hour
I have lost the will to fight
And I think I have the power
...

The house is burning.
Do you smell the smoke?
Meddling in foreign problems
Neglecting simple realities
...

6.

What is this emotion
that I have no right to feel?

With all the dead and dying
...

Remember when...
A silent stare spoke volumes
Sitting in that class room
Up at the community college
...

I sit across from her
with the same old story on my tongue.
I know I must say something,
but I can't say this.
...

The waves break over the bow
The wind drys salt across my face
The rain beats on the canopy
We use the lightening to keep pace
...

You clever little temptress
For you I wrote each word
And I’ll keep you in this notebook
‘til I muster up the courage
...

I am kept here in this cage
I am trapt here by my tongue
I can see just what I want
But the words just will not come
...

Will you come to see my face,
Because you know that I’ll be there?
Does knowing I won’t reject,
Take away the risk and make it all safe?
...

I think I’m happy with my stink
The smell of a successful catch
The mixture of sea water and sweat
Raw fish smeared across my chin
...

Away with words
Let's cut them down
Make every syllable
A foreign sound
...

I know I shouldn't but I do.
They say women can tell,
but did you see the glance,
the little look I couldn't resist.
...

I was a teacher a prophet a poet
A thinker a drinker a student
A speaker a listener a spinner
...

I did a little research and found
That the lamp cost $49.97 plus tax
And well I am saving up
I'll have fifty dollars after three pay days
...

Thank you Mr. Wilson
(of no relation to Denis' neighbor)
For punching me in the eye last night
...

Wittle away at time
this giant redwood that you lucked upon
in the midst of the evergreens
in the wood behind your home
...

So i rip it all apart
So i try to start again
With all these little holes
Where little nails must have been
...

The Best Poem Of Stephen Martin II

Do You Remember What It Was Like?

I have hit the bottom
and it is farther down,
than I once imagined.

I past the lost
and the hopeless,
and went farther down.

I past the drunks
and the criminals
straight through the floor.

Sometimes people give me change
even though
I don't have a cup.

And they laugh at my jokes
especially the pessimistic ones
that aren't at all funny.

Do you remember what it was like...
Do you remember what it was like,
to have never failed?
