Special Delivery Poem by bob barci

Special Delivery

Was told just yesterday
that you had gone away.
Got a telegram that said
I wouldn't be seeing you anymore,
and neither would anyone else.
Thought it was a joke at first
coming from your strange sense of humor.
I let it pass, but kept on thinking about it.
You would make it appear official.
I chuckled some at your warped joke
and cried some too, to think it true.
I thought it to be your way of apologizing
for not being around for such a long time.
Another look at the telegram,
it says you were taken away
and that I'd get over you by mending the pieces.
I called your home to find out what the story was.
Didn't find out.
But I knew that something was terribly wrong.
You couldn't have really gone away.
Has to be a joke.
That's all it is.
A joke that is being well played.

Today I got a large box.
Somebody sent it special delivery.
I wonder what it is.
Who'd send me a box of any kind?
Hey - there's an envelope.
Instructions say to open in the privacy of my room.
Ok, let's go.

Now to carefully open this box marked fragile.
The box is open
and I'm half insane.
Who would have believed that that telegram was to be taken
literally?
I opened the box to find the first of those pieces to mend together.
There upon the bed I sleep
in a box marked special delivery
lies your head.
