Listen Up Poem by Virginia D. McNair

Listen Up

Listen people, listen well; While I spin this unjust tale
Of a time of long ago, Of a world we did not know Brought were we across the sea, shackled with chains,
Wondering and feeling, has the whole gone insane! As the ship dropped anchor at the dock; We where unloaded then sold on blocks.
Sold like merchandise, can’t you see. We weren’t even recognized as human beings. Some of us were used to work their fields, others had their babies and cooked their meals.
No longer life of our own, tot he master our lives belong They raped our women, murdered our men
sold our children and said they committed no sin So listen up to what I say, our ancestors lost all life,
pride and humanity, so we could live with dignity
