Higher Ground! ! ! Poem by Seema joglekar

Higher Ground! ! !

After the fit of mango showers,
Hill & dale fume in cold sweat,
Lifting aromas off the ground,
Sun hurls a beehive at every head.

While he petitions- wet buds,
To stock up their syrups,
And nubile mango leaves to deeper reds.
Every closing flower shelters,
A pearl dropp on her bed.

Admitting rays one at a time,
Roving clouds open like a turnstile,
Sweet misery, deciding to be,
In light or shade; takes a while.

Over all this the cuckoo drowns,
Wails that to the slums belong,
The cursing in the streets,
Catch the fierce mood of his song.

From trees shadows glimmer,
Patterns are woven and undone,
From every shade solitude is sought,
But for me there is none.

Subtle wind blows the chaff
And keeps the grain,
Wasted things hit the ground,
While good is retained.

The vine clings to the clover,
Enough to draw a deeper breath,
In a love that asks nothing in return,
But- the simple truth.

Twittering birds swear at the rainbow,
Finding their wish marooned in the sky,
Like the bitter -sweet of the season,
A God in every glade can be found,
Only if you knew how to look high.

The same season, another place, another time
End of a long silent walk, with no debate to prove,
Contented, you reached a low branch to touch the leaves,
My reward - with me, you reach for things above.
