Get It Back Poem by Brandi Parker

Get It Back

a rancid taste lingers in my mouth
an acrid smoke coils and curls
a metallic clang deafens
as my fingers slowly unfurl
drifting above my body i see
all the things i should have done
you could say it's too late now
the bullet in the chamber won
my life didn't flash before my eyes
closed as they were it was what i lacked
the things i didn't do haunting me
no way now to get it back
my vision was blurred and narrow
i signed a blank check for something i couldn't see
the merchant is cashing in my only heirloom
i traded my hand for one of lesser means
fool's gold is my replacement
now all i have are tears to show
for the poor judgements made
if only i knew then what i now know
it would have made a difference
now i'm casket sharp and six feet deep
gasping and choking for air
i wake to realize it was only a dream
only?
