Down Town Poem by Jon M. Nelson

Down Town

Walking endless miles has worn holes
into the souls of the shoes upon my feet.
No matter which way that I turn now
there seems to be a dead-end street.

The more that I keep on walking,
the farther I continue to roam.
It just keeps taking me further and further,
away from the place I once called home.

Everywhere that I look is different now,
there is nothing that I no longer recognize.
The familiar scenery just keeps on changing,
and it's happening right before my eyes.

This location is no longer any place,
reminiscent of my happy childhood.
I don't recall this area anymore,
that was once a peaceful neighborhood.

The familiar aura that I once knew,
now suddenly feels so awkward and strange.
It was always going to be inevitable
that everything around me had to change.

So many dreams have now been shattered,
and everything has become so run down.
I am walking aimlessly through a nightmare,
in what has become a crazy nowhere town.

While this place is extremely crowded,
I notice that I'm constantly walking alone.
There is no longer any personal interaction,
for everybody has become mindless drone.

Although I know exactly where I am,
in this world we are all currently lost.
The technology has taken control,
and the battle lines have been crossed.

It does not seem to really matter,
all the unique places that I have been,
It is like what they have always said,
'You cannot go home again.'

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I am aware of the word souls in the second line, when it is supposed to be soles. I intentionally used this word to express the burden the person is going through.
