Brown Skin Poem by Ibn Ali

Brown Skin

We're taught that everything white is beautiful
And all that's black is blemished
All that's fair is pure
And every dark thing is devilish
I see you clutch your purse
I find that so offensive
I should give you what you fear
Against my better senses
I'm not a clichéd beauty
My eyes aren't blue but brown
Like darkened amber resin
Bold and fully round
My hair amazes water
Defiantly unwound
My lips are made for kissing
My voice will never drown
I'm not a foreign being
My difference superficial
I am the son of Adam
Can you not recognise me still?
