Gwaihir (With Respect To Tolkien)

Oh take the Ring, Mighty Gwaihir,
And fly across these lands of Middle Earth
On the fragrant air,
Take it to the lands at the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom.

Oh take the Ring, Mighty Gwaihir,
and ride the winds that shake the mountains
Fly the great tides at the roof of the sky
Take it to the lands at the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom.

Oh take the Ring, Mighty Gwaihir,
Hurl your strength against the thunder clouds
That roll across the plains
Take it to the lands at the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom.

Oh take the Ring, Mighty Gwaihir,
Spread your wings beneath the desert sun
And drive yourself across the scorching mirror of the earth
Take it to the lands at the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom.

Open your wings, mighty Gwaihir,
Open your heart,
Oh take the Ring, mighty Gwaihir,
Take it back to the fires where it was forged
at the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom.
Why do you not answer me, Oh messenger of Manwë?
Why do you stand proud and silent on the summits of your eyrie?
Do your far-seeing eyes not see the pain upon the land?
Does your proud heart not open to the need of Middle Earth?
Have you forgotten the wars fought by your ancestors?
Have you forgotten the courage of your kind?
Have you forgotten the alliance with Elves and Dwarves and Men?
Have you forgotten that I - who came so far to call your name,
that I who stand unanswered here, have been your friend?

And Gwaihir turned and bowed his mighty head,
And the sun fell upon his feathers and burnished them to gold,
And his eyes appeared like fiery stars
And his talons glinted on the unrelenting stone like swords
And his beak was the scimitar of Death.
Do not anger me, he said.
Do you think I am tame to your wishes?
Do you think I would not hurl you from this rock or
Tear the heart from out your breast
If you rouse the fury of my blood?

But you do me wrong.
I have seen the Malice at the edge of the world
I have seen the pain upon the land
I forget nothing: not the battles of my ancestors,
nor of yours;
Not the alliances of friends,
Nor the tyrannies of evil.
You are mighty, O Grey One,
I have seen you in battle overthrow a hundred men at a single blow.
You too have crossed the mountains and the fires of the earth.
You know its deeps and you know its paths.
In the sky you cannot hide but the turbulent earth
Offers a thousand, thousand sanctuaries,
Why do you not take the Ring to the edge of the world and lose it in Mount Doom?

Do not answer me for what is in your own heart is in mine too.
Do you think, remote upon our heights,
We know nothing of power?
Do you think that through long years of solitude
We know nothing of desire?
Do you think the clarity of the sky is in our souls?
That justice flies upon our wings?
As you are made, so too are we.
Long enough have you tempted me
So tremble at your folly, and make an end
And go, and know that you are still the Eagles' friend.
