Sibulelo Manamatela Poems

Where the warm brown-coloured earth
Meets the blue coolness of the skies,
Where a panorama of a contemporary city
Melts into endless wild grass,
...

Bumpy dust roads,
Chilren,
White Corrugated lips,
Outstretched hands.

Sibulelo Manamatela Biography

Sibulelo Mpilwenhle Manamatela was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, a city in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. At 18 months she was captured merrily clasping a book and that was the beginning of her love for reading. Sometime between teenage love affairs and their inevitable heartbreaks and learning how to ‘adult’ she was found by poetry. At 19 she resolved to taking her poems to stage. After performing for the first time at an open mic session (Grounding Sessions) at Targore’s in Observatory, Cape Town she began her journey of sharing. In the same year she co-wrote and performed her first poetry-based play in the Current State of Poetry Theatre Festival. Currently on a pilgrimage of self-discovery Sibulelo is locating more designations to add to her repertoire. Can be found in Cape Town, South Africa, for now.)

The Horizon Is Every Thin Line

Where the warm brown-coloured earth
Meets the blue coolness of the skies,
Where a panorama of a contemporary city
Melts into endless wild grass,

Where black and white pictures of slums starkly
Juxtapose colour images of suburban homes,
Where beggars calloused palms
Accept polished silver coins from soft hands,

Where friends arms cuddling your bare skin
Contrasts with knives being thrown at you,
When a glint in your lover's eye
Turns into shards of glass piercing your heart:
This is where the horizon lies.
