Your Promise Poem by G. Akanji Olaniyi

Your Promise

Now I know what it means to own somebody
A person! ! !
To say that: that person belongs to me
A human being out there in the middle of the billions
A woman in the sea of women
Black, brown, dark, red, yellow, fair, white and all those colours
Tall, short, average, fat, slim, slender, thin and all those sizes
Brilliant, intelligent, dull, daft, foolish, stupid and all those qualities
It is not easy picking one out of all them
That is why I say: “Thank you for loving my friend”
I know that love is mutual; reciprocal
Yet it takes two tango!
So from now on
You shall be his voice; whenever he speaks
His sight; to see
His heart that will not stop beating
His thinking that controls all other things
Then the sun for him when the day breaks
The moon for him to illuminate his dark night
The star for him to beautify his nightly sky
You be everything he desires in a woman
You promise
That is the reason he had chosen you
