You And Me Poem by Helen Lawson

You And Me

If the me I should have been and the you who might have been had met, would we have even looked at each other?

If life had been kinder to each, would we have felt what we felt when we met?
If we had each had better childhoods, would we have been able to love each other better? Or would we have not needed each other at all? Would our lives have been better if we had never met?

Impossible questions to answer now, with you gone forever and me left alone.

I regret not leaving that place in the beginning.
I regret so many things, but most of all
I regret not loving you enough and you not loving me enough
to stand up and tell the world to leave us in peace.

Sad regrets now, with you gone forever and me left alone.

So I try now to remember only the good.
The good times we had and the love we felt.
A love that always felt to both as if we’d met before and loved each other before.
Such emotion that not even separation or death can really keep us apart.

Such strong emotion even now, with you gone forever and me left alone.

But you are never really gone – always in my thoughts.
Our love lives on in my heart, mind and soul.
You are part of me forever - as I am part of you.
Our love lives forever as long as I remember.

And when I die, it lives again – no-one gone forever and no-one left alone.

Wait for me – I’m waiting for you.
