'Wood' You Believe It? Poem by Simon Gowen

'Wood' You Believe It?

Rating: 5.0

I took a walk into the woods
I needed inspiration
When I heard a voice say
“Scuse me sir” I turned in hesitation

I was greeted by a tiny mole
Who told me secret things
Of the life within this wooded field
And all the joys it brings

“Don’t pay on entry” he advised
“Doe n Buck” charge you a fee
“That’s 2 deer” I think I shall explain
These wooded walks are free.

There’s always lots of gossip
The birds here love to tweet
But don’t forget the insects that
Are crawling at your feet

As you stumble through the brambles
“Bugs” will play the clown
Just ignore his silly antics
It’s good to let your hare down.

There’s a sleeping cat upon the bench
We know he is a killer
But the butterflies and moths will help you
Give the Caterpillar

Now as you walk towards the oak
There’s squirrels, one or two
And it gives them hours of pleasure
To dropp the nut on you!

There’s a mushroom patch
That’s guarded, by an angry looking toad
He’ll sit upon his stool and frown
As hedgehogs cross the road.

Now if you like our haven
Then enjoy it on our terms
And next time you are passing by
I’m partial to fresh worms!
