Wolves (About Delhi Gang Rape & Related Protests) Poem by Vikas Sharma

Wolves (About Delhi Gang Rape & Related Protests)

Ever since the days of Red Riding Hood,
Wolves are on prowl in every neighborhood
By them girls are tormented and assaulted
Women of all age, size and class targeted
Every episode of theirs shakes our soul
And in a protest march or two we enroll
After a day or two, life is back to normal
As if for the cause, we have done the ample
In this very Delhi in '78 Gita Chopra they kill
Along with her brother Sanjay, memories still chill
We meted out justice by hanging the culprits
And instituting awards in the names of victims
Now a girl again faced the torment on a moving bus
The fact they were 6 of them tells how callous and heinous
In between '78 and now many girls and women faced the brunt
And every time we protested and sat disgruntled
We think government ought to do something about it
Maybe bring in tougher laws and hang the rapist
But will that change anything? .. I wonder though
For the victims it's a hell of a lifetime she has to undergo
Hunting the wolves that made the kill
Is no assurance that there are no more, still

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I simply have no idea about the answer to this problem... I read a lot of world wide research on psychology of rapist over last three days... the first two lines of the poem were written 3 days ago.... i wanted to write about the rapists and their mentality
But reading all research they conclude that no motive...except a momentarily feeling of power and strength on a weaker individual is the motive
Sex is not joyous even for the rapist in a rape.... it is only the feeling of 'I prevailed on her' that is driving force for the moment
The background checks do not hint a possible rapist ever.... just a episode or situation where he can prevail on a woman is the trigger

So I was kind of lost after two lines

Red Riding Hoods are there and so are Wolves... but then what?

And then came today's protests

These protest set me thinking......now came the bit what the hell are we doing about it and what really can we do
Age old idea of raped woman killing the rapist also came to my mind as it has advocated so long... but remember what psychological research said about rapists... they prevail upon women when they are weak.... so no raped woman kill there and then... and later there is nothing left to kill
But answer is perhaps somewhere in pic 2 about asking sons to behave
The rapists too are sons of someone
We need social change..political and legal won't do anything

How the social change has to come I have no idea?

Billa Ranga of Gita-Sanjay Chopra case were hanged... but Delhi still remains 'Rape Capital' of nation
