Wizards Of The Niger River Poem by Jerry Ukaigwe

Wizards Of The Niger River

Rating: 4.8

Chei! see the incision across the limbs of lizards
The boils about the bottom of delta land
And your kits knit with knees and gizzard
This is your demon-cracy oh Pharaohs in Asoland

You clawed our pipelines and licked the black blood
Leaving the day dark without light and lantern
Looting, gloating, globetrotting with our cowrie and colt
To Antwerp, Anthill, Antioch and Athens

Oh! Luck your mind is meek but milked
By the ancient wizards of the Niger river
Glowing with greed, graft and goods of that ilk
So your shine cant be heard from that valley of Iva

Brothers spill the cauldron and the wizardry goes
Peel the python and the eggs remain
Wean the child and the milk moors
At the habour of humane men

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poems captures the failure on the part of Nigerian political leaders to utilize the beauty of democracy and abundant natural resources to improve Nigeria's economy and infrastructure.Rather they have taken to corruption and embezzlement, leaving most of the citizens in pain and penury. It also mirrors the existence of an aged cult of corruption that hedges around governance and party politics in the country, which can dwarf the individual morality of a president.
