Witness Ceased Existence Poem by Helen Bauman

Witness Ceased Existence

Rating: 5.0

Do we each one endure in a small world all our own?
Or are there other persons who really share our soul?
Epiphany is singular when crowded or alone
Yet we remain in endless doubt, -
Experimenting, wond'ring, dabbling and seeking
Yes we remain in endless doubt; all novice mystagogues.

They say cooperation is the key to one's success.
Without another person, there is no happiness.
Because we are so all alone, we strive and strive to share,
Yet ever we are sceptical, -
Reticent and hesitant, frightened by commitment
Humankind the sceptics of intensity in pairs.

Imagine being in a world where not another lived,
Where everything you saw and did was unique not plagiarised,
Where witness to any deed had no effect at all
For they had ceased existence, -
Had faded into history, a complex of mystery,
Witness ceased existence, no judge stood proud and tall.

How would our morals dissipate with no reason to pretend?
Into what depravity would humankind descend?
Nihilism, anarchy or holocaust one night.
Or are we only kept in line -
When time and space are boundless and freedom is a right,
Are we only kept in line by other's words of spite?

Man is a labeller - needs badges for his strain,
Thought streams condensed in acronyms and names,
Bombarded and reminded how to think and do and be,
We seek to ponder time and space, -
Where's the time and where's the space?
Ponder our conditions and what will set us free
