Winterlude Poem by William F Dougherty

Winterlude

Rating: 5.0

Chalks of birch
lambent, lean
in a cuticle moon's unclouded glare;
a thrash of branches, tossing, click
like strings of dice
in tumbling air.

Welting winds
hector the snow,
glossing its downy quilt with a crust,
buffer hibernates from stalactite blades,
as winterlude
fulfills a trust.

Enameled snow
cushions sleepers
curled in burrows for nature's curfew-
beyond the soil's sharp cutlery of ice
woodchucks and toads
doze deep in queue.

Analogy well made. Poems here about animals, birds, trees, natural settings posted almost always are metaphors for humane moods, complexities, circumstances.

I can feel the unkind winter that has made the stalactite blades that poke the poverty of poor in our region, where our people sleep with out a proper blanket on the street, when the animals at least have the burrows.

Fact-snow cover protects hibernating animals from ground-ice.
