Winged Words Poem by dimitrios galanis

Winged Words

Rating: 5.0

Dark labirynth your snaky paths of sentiments.
How to orient exit's great stride
towards the world of measures and weights,
world you never were fond of
so to have ready access, coordinates!
You hang your hope's courage on winged words,
free scattered on the market of impressions
by all sorts of candidates for an enchanting sceptre.
With their feathery offerings, you dream
effortlessly climbing up
to happiness lofts you are longing for.
You wander to your daedalic delusions
aimlessly spinning around your blind meanders,
complicated by the feathery tentacles
your hopeless boldness armed your fantasy.
But it's the winged soul
which gives feathers to freedom from passions
not the empty promises,
winged words.

Winged Words
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A rendering into english of my 'Πτερόεντα έπεα'
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

It's the winged soul which gives feathers to freedom from passions - The very end of your poem opens up to a vista just glimpsed but promising true liberation. The imagery is very claustrophobic until that flight, with useless wanderings that only acquaint the desperate people with the contour of their prison. But the imagery shows they are committing the same mistakes over and over - until they see and seek the light. The closing reminds me of the end of Milton's splendid Samson Agonistes: PEACE... AND CALM OF MIND ALL PASSION SPENT. We are fighting for the same triumph Milton fought for: each generation must achieve its crown of glory.

You know ''winged words'' is taken from Ilias and Odyssee ''έπεα πτερόεντα'', where meant are those promises to influence consciences.

People profess great things standing on the pulpit, but when it comes to action, they fail miserably, Unfortunately people believe their words and weave dreams around them. By the time they come to realize the hollowness of their words, it must be very late. So never believe in empty words, but depend on the power and strength of one's soul. A very powerful write!

Words, when lofty, without substance, melt and fall to the ground impotent.

ACTION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WORDS? ? I felt that is the central theme of this poem. And although I am not very adept at mythology, I can feel that you have drawn a reference to the myth of Daedalas (I hope I spelt it right, forgive me, if I err there) . Those who 'fly' too much on the basis of their empty, boastful words shall meet the same fate of Icarus.. Also, I feel, it is about those people who do not know the 'coordinates' of the path of living a life, they go on and on boasting how they are experts at living, but when out in the real world - the labyrinthe - they fail, and fail miserably.. Thank you for sharing Dimitrios. I really love your poems.....

It's me who have to thank you, dear Souren.Yes, it is a reference to the labirynth built by Daedalus in Creta. To every labirynth, here to that of uncrear sentiments. Those lost in the labirynth fly upon their own delusions but mostly they think they can fly upon the empty promises of others promising an effortlessly climbing uo to happiness lofts. There are many in our world who do this, promises, to deceit others....
