Wild West Legend Poem by Joyce Hemsley

Jane Cannary-Burke 1852 - 1903.

Wild West Jane of Missouri fame,
was known by more than one name:
Jane Cannary, Martha Jane and
believe it or not ~ Calamity Jane.
How did this name come to be?
Just take it from me
'twas said jokingly
by a Captain Egan from history.
And I quote his little refrain...

'I name you Calamity Jane
the heroine of the plain'.
This phrase he repeated
over again:
'I name you Calamity Jane
the heroine of the plain'.
