Why, You So Calm Poem by Cigeng Zhang

Why, You So Calm

Rating: 4.5

You are so calm
like a lofty sage
I cannot see
a trace of trembling in your eyes
What is your real feeling?
What is in your inner stage?
Stone, hard stone
or rock, hard rock
Rock in rocks?
You may not a heart of stone
because I chant to you always
for your grace and silence
But you lose sight of my lonely heart
You fling my heart of pains to four winds
Why your turn blind on my loneliness
Why you look so calm, so calm
I feel a heart of coldness
when you turn a cold face

If ever a poem could penetrate a heart of stone this one could. And it should because it is completely sincere. You do not raise your voice and wail for help. You don't cast any accusations. You do not burden the figure with details of your loneliness. But you do call this figure to account. As a figure in our world, in this dimension of space and time, in a world of feeling creatures, of people who are easily hurt, a figure of such power and authority has a responsibility to help. Does the sun refuse to shine on flowers? Do the trees withold from us their fruit? Does a monk fail to bless a pilgrim? Does a teacher hoard all the knowledge? There - I've added my fervent prose to your fervent poetry. (In the second song oF Gustav Mahler's Songs of the Earth, based on poems by LiPo, the soprano sings, WHEN WILL YOU SHINE ON ME, SUN OF LOVE? I'm going to play my recording of that song right now and dedicate the performance to you, Cigeng! ! Wonderful things can happen with music and poetry!)

Your lonely heart is wanting to be filled with love, not calm coldness. There is someone seeking you too......

Thank you very much Lyn. A heart won't be so lonely if someone shares it.
