Why Hoard? Poem by Basanta Lohani

Why Hoard?

Why are you cheesed, my friend?
Why so drained out and starved?
Why accumulate only to grudge?
Think!
Pick the mind for an answer!

You hide because you derive
A pleasure of some kind;
But the more you hide
The more you drain yourself out
With overfed resentment.
Inside this vicious circle
Frustration raises its head
Calling you to hide even more.
’Tis like inviting an itch
For the pleasure of a scratch.
You are just one among many.
Not everything settles the way you want it.
Like you, others too have wisdom,
Collective goals, creativity
And sensitivity
To guard the portals of greatness.

Time to stop being self-righteous, my friend!
Brush aside your 'I'm holier than thou attitude, '
It will only drain you out.
Or, you become anaemic
As you grudge against life
With wide open eyes fixed nowhere
With a little heavy breathing
With a little damp sweat
That add up to your exasperation
In the quietness of a gliding night!
